Profile

Prof. Dr. Sigrid Elsenbruch is Chair of Medical Psychology and Medical Sociology and Director of the Outpatient Clinic for Psychotherapy at the Faculty of Medicine, Ruhr University Bochum. She also leads the Counselling Service for Medical Students. Her research investigates the neurobiological and psychophysiological mechanisms underlying brain–gut interactions and visceral pain, with particular emphasis on the modulatory role of stress and cognitive–affective processes in symptom perception and chronification. Situated at the interface of biological psychology and cognitive–affective neuroscience, her work spans experimental studies in healthy individuals, mechanistic research in patients, and evidence-based psychotherapeutic interventions in chronic pain, thereby translating mechanistic insights into clinically relevant understanding and therapeutic strategies.
