Prof. Dr. Sigrid Elsenbruch ist W3-Professorin für Medizinische Psychologie und Medizinische Soziologie an der Medizinischen Fakultät der Ruhr-Universität Bochum sowie Direktorin der Hochschulambulanz für Psychotherapie. Zudem leitet sie die Beratungsstelle für Medizinstudierende.
Ihre Forschung untersucht die neurobiologischen und psychophysiologischen Mechanismen von Gehirn-Darm-Interaktionen und viszeralem Schmerz mit besonderem Schwerpunkt auf der modulierenden Rolle von Stress sowie kognitiv-affektiven Prozessen bei Symptomwahrnehmung und Chronifizierung. An der Schnittstelle von Biologischer Psychologie und kognitiv-affektiver Neurowissenschaft verbindet ihre Arbeit experimentelle Studien an Gesunden, mechanistische Untersuchungen an Patientinnen und Patienten sowie evidenzbasierte psychotherapeutische Interventionen im Bereich chronischer Schmerzen. Ziel ist es, mechanistische Erkenntnisse in klinisch relevante Erklärungsmodelle und therapeutische Strategien zu überführen.
